PHOTOGRAPHIC JOURNEY
7-day ITINERARY
Bundles and Blooms
We start at dawn along the Hooghly River, where the Malik Ghat Flower Market bursts to life under golden light. Surrounded by mountains of marigolds, vendors, and porters, it’s a high-energy shoot ideal for environmental portraits and motion. Just above, the silhouette of Howrah Bridge cuts through the morning haze — a perfect backdrop for wide compositions and layered street scenes.
Scenes Between the Shelves
We shift focus to College Street, the intellectual heart of the city. Among endless rows of bookstalls, we document readers, shopkeepers, and spontaneous conversations. At the nearby Indian Coffee House, the faded interiors and lively debates offer moody lighting and strong candid opportunities in a space rich with history.
Idols in the Making
We begin in Kumartuli, the famed artisan district where sculptors craft clay idols for upcoming festivals. In the soft morning light, we step into narrow workshops to photograph artists at work — hands in motion, details forming, and textures catching the light. The setting offers strong environmental portraits and layered compositions that reveal tradition and craft.
Alleys of the Old North
We explore the nearby lanes of Shovabazar and Chitpur Road, where heritage homes, peeling facades, and crumbling archways create a timeless backdrop. Rickshaws, street vendors, and passing locals provide a constant flow of candid opportunities. The slower pace here allows time to focus on framing, light, and rhythm in your street photography.
River Light and Ritual
We head to the riverfront at Prinsep Ghat to photograph morning rituals along the Hooghly. Boatmen prepare for the day, people bathe, and soft light filters through the haze. The Vidyasagar Setu bridge provides a dramatic backdrop, offering wide compositional opportunities and reflective surfaces that shift with the light.
Crowds and Crossings
In the afternoon, we explore Park Street and the bustling alleys around New Market. This area blends colonial architecture with vibrant urban energy — ideal for street scenes full of color, contrast, and movement. From narrow food stalls to fast-paced crossings, we document the layered life of central Kolkata.
Rush Hour at the Bazaar
We begin in Bara Bazaar, Kolkata’s busiest wholesale market. The dense crowds, narrow alleys, and bursts of color offer a fast-paced environment for high-energy street photography. From handcarts to spice sacks, and textile vendors to fleeting portraits, this is a chance to embrace visual chaos and work on decisive timing.
Edges of the Old City
In the afternoon, we slow down in Sudder Street and Esplanade, where street life unfolds against colonial-era facades and heritage buildings. Backpackers, locals, and long-time shopkeepers share the sidewalks, creating opportunities for layered scenes, strong silhouettes, and moments of quiet within the flow.
Stillness by the Lake
We begin the day at Rabindra Sarobar, where quiet paths, lakeside reflections, and early morning walkers create a more meditative pace. Joggers, tai chi groups, and casual exercisers offer candid opportunities with softer light and a more spacious environment. It’s a good time to slow down and focus on composition and mood.
Outside the Temple Walls
In the afternoon, we visit Kalighat Temple and the surrounding lanes. While the temple itself draws devotees and ritual activity, the real street stories often happen just outside — flower vendors, offerings, barefoot pilgrims, and conversations around tea stalls. It’s a rich space for portraits and observational storytelling.
Across the Maidan
We begin at the Maidan, Kolkata’s vast open green, where locals play cricket, ride horses, and go about their morning routines. The wide space offers a change of pace — from long-lens portraits to layered street scenes with strong silhouettes. We also explore the grounds around the Victoria Memorial, where colonial architecture meets everyday life.
Red Brick and Quiet Scenes
In the afternoon, we turn to Bow Barracks and Tiretti Bazaar, two neighborhoods often overlooked but full of visual stories. The red-brick lanes of Bow Barracks reflect Anglo-Indian heritage, while Tiretti Bazaar still hints at Kolkata’s Chinese influence. Between casual portraits, food vendors, and quiet domestic scenes, this is a chance to capture a side of the city rarely seen.
On the Move
We start the day at Sealdah Railway Station, one of the busiest in the city. The atmosphere is intense — commuters in motion, porters loading goods, and fleeting gestures all around. Nearby streets are equally charged, with street-side stalls and layered activity offering a strong final session for dynamic, candid frames.
Light by the Water
In the late afternoon, we make our way to Babughat to photograph the riverside as it transitions into evening. Bathers, boatmen, and quiet observers fill the scene as the light softens. Sunset brings long shadows and reflections on the water — a calm and evocative way to end our week of shooting.
